The Trinity Eco Tourist Lodge

We are working on a business plan to build a non-profit eco tourist lodge in the Trinity Forest. Tourists would canoe from Sylvan to the lodge while taking in all of the beauty of the downtown skyline, the wave park and then the forest. Guests to the lodge will enjoy dinner and entertainment in the central lodge and will retire to their bungalows at night. In the morning, they can hike, bike or horseback ride through the many beautiful trails that the Trinity Corridor Project has developed.

We will share our business plan for this endeavor and for the concession stands for the Trinity Wave park with City Councilmann David Neumann when he visits us on the week of the 16th - at that time, we will refer to him as newly elected Councilman David Neumann, because he will have won the elections on May 14th.

Video from Video Conference with UT Law Student Rachel Stone Regarding Students wanting to open concession stands in the new Trinity Wave Park

Heather K. Way, Director, Community Development Clinic, University of Texas School of Law asked her student Rachel Stone to research and present her findings to my students on the possibility of my graduating seniors to open concession stands in the new Trinity River Wave Park. We were not able to meet with Ms. Stone until during her final exam week, so we are very thankful for her diligence and thoroughness in researching the many City of Dallas rules and regulations involved with such an operation. Ms. Stone clarified that the current laws do not allow the setting up of tents and tables in the Trinity Wave Park. She gives us, however, the name of an attorney that very much like to assist us in this endeavor. Professor Way has also promised that she wants very much for her students from the Community Development Clinic work with my classes on our various South Dallas initiatives once the new school year comes around.

The Increasing Velocity of the Business Cycle

Read Pages 60-61 at the botom "Cybernomics Spotlight" In this article, Michael Dell says that Business Velocity is increasing (through out the world). Note that by business he means the business cycle, which is the proces of getting goods from the manufacturer to the consumer; by velocity he means the speed of getting the goods from the manufacturer to the consumer. Question:

  1. Mr. Dell attributes the increase in business velocity to what 4 reductions in the business cycle?

  2. What developments in technology allowed for this change? Explain.

After answering questions, we had a class discussion over this.

Export of Used Goods Project

 Assignment Part I- Product Choice
Students: go to alibaba.com then click on "User Guide". Take 10 minutes to glance through this. This is the modern "Product Market". This is not a consumer market where you go to buy one or two small items like the grocery store or ebay. This is where manufacturers sell, and retailers (like Walmart or ebay stores) buy what they sell. This is also a place where entrepreneurs get started in business.

From the Alibaba home page click the link "Buying Links". Type the word "used" in the search box so that you can see what used items people around the world are willing to pay money for.

Choose one item that you think you might be able to find for free here in the US that you could sell to an overseas company that is looking for that good (buyers on this page are only there because they want to buy something). Students, pick one item, click on the link and write down all the information about what the buyer requires and their contact info.
Only choose an ad for a good (an item) that the buyer wants to buy that is available in the US; you might choose to sell an item that you have laying around your house like an old cell phone, you may have seen the item laying around (like old tires ), or you may have seen the item listed on craigslist or freecycle.com. Choose an item that is neither ethically nor legally problematic (some chemical compounds that are asked for on Alibaba are illegal to mine in the US).
Turn in your product choice to me and we will discuss your choice.

2) What is the geographic location of the goods in the US? What shipping methods are available? What restrictions are there on transportation of such goods? What export documentation is required?

6) Financial arrangements that they (as the middleman) must make with both the supplier of the goods and the buyer of the goods. These will include Letters of Credit; FOB specifies which party (buyer or seller) pays for which shipment and loading costs, and/or where responsibility for the goods is transferred. This is important for determining liability for goods lost or damaged in transit from the seller to the buyer.

The difference between Democrats and Republicans view of Economics

American economics philosopher, Adam Smith, wrote that the most efficient economy is one in which the government has a laissez faire attitude toward business. This means that the government should involve itself as little as possible in the affairs of its commercial sector. However, the commercial sector's function is to meet the needs of the people, but it is motivated by greed and profits. A popularly elected government is mandated by the people to protect the people and must be vigilant to protect the people against unscrupulous businesses.

I the US, the Republican Party is strongly on the side of the government's laissez faire relation with business. The Democratic Party is more concerned with protecting the people from corporate greed. Which way the pendulum swings depends on who is in power. In November 2010, the Republicans campaigned on reducing the size of the government. Many Americans who are out of work and are in debt, rallied around the Republican call for reducing the size of government in order to reduce the size of US debt and helped the Republicans gain control of the House of Representatives. Democrats (who still hold the majority in the Senate) prefer to reduce the size of the Government by eliminating redundancies and streamlining processes; they are against cutting social programs that help the less fortunate and regulation of business in protection of the people.

Installation instructions from those who received a webcam

To install the webcam:

After restarting your computer, click Start> Programs> Philips> - then click on, hold and drag the icon for the Funcam to your desktop to make a short cut. Double click the icon and your program opens.

Click file> capture to choose capture video or record audio. Clcik record and the program asks you to choose a place to save the file and what name to give it; choose a place that is easy to find like your desktop.

To use the camera to speak to your Australian partner, you must install Skype on your computer; Download it from http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=skype&platformSelect=Windows&tag=srch&searchtype=downloads&filterName=platform%3DWindows&filter=platform%3DWindows and follow the instructions. The installation will have you create an account for Sype. If you decide to use another computer later, you will have to install Skype on that computer, but you will use the same Skype account.

Because Skype is not like a telephone which has a ringer to tell you that someone is calling, you will need to set a time to meet with your partner on skype. Just exchange Skype usernames with them. When you log on to Skype, you can find them by their username. The only plausible time to do this is after you get out of school, they will be coming to school. Find out what time they are in Mr. Williams' class and can speak to you.

Are you having problem's uploading your videos?
There is a limit to the size of the video that you can upload. I just made a 23 minute video that I cut in half and uploaded. You have to download Windows Movie Maker. From Movie Maker, click file> import and browse to your recording. This puts your video up in the workspace; you just need to drag your video on to the timeline. Save the file as “full video”. Listen to the video and find a good place to cut it; just pause the video and hit the cut button (on the right). Delete the second part of the video. Save the file as “video project part 1”, then click file> publish move> on my computer. Then go back to the “full video” and delete the first half. Save the second part in both the project format and the published movie. Watch where you save the movie file. Its file extension is .wmv – these are the files that you upload to your blog. You can put both parts in your one post, but each video has to be small.

Video taken directly from the camera is in .avi format which is not condensed like Movie Maker files, so only a very very short video from the camera can be posted directly to a blog.
Below is the link to download Movie Maker for Windows XP
http://download.cnet.com/Windows-Movie-Maker-Windows-XP/3000-13631_4-10165075.html?tag=mncol;1

The link for Windows Vista is http://download.cnet.com/Windows-Movie-Maker-Windows-Vista/3000-13631_4-10729231.html?tag=mncol;2
I was having problems with some of my videos even when I cut them down to 12 minutes, so I changed one setting in Movie Maker. When you are in the Publish movie file wizard in the Choose the settings for your Movie screen choose to compress the file to 99 MB.

Academic Goals For February 7th - 18th

Students will understand 1) the fundamental economic problem of scarcity, 2) know the difference between needs and wants and are able to answer the three basic economic questions of what to produce, how to produce it and for whom to produce; the impact and different ways consumers affect the economy.

Due February 11th - Vocabulary Over Economic Scarcity: Needs and Wants

Use any two two methods from the Vocabulary Acquisition Strategies (document posted to the right margin of my blog) to cover all Chapter 1 Vocabulary (including sections 1 - 3).
You can also see the vocabulary on the link below:

Due February 18th - Read Chapter One & Choose two of the four activities

  • Students will create a collage of needs and wants. On one side of the paper they will cut out and paste pictures of their individual needs and on the other side they will paste their wants. The collage should describe the nature of economics. Discuss the relevance of the subject to class members, and point out how they may benefit from an understanding of the subject.
  • Students will write a letter to their congressman explaining how scarcity affects their lives.
  • Student will take an online reality check of how much money they will need to support their lifestyle on http://jumpstart.org/reality-check-page1.html. Write a short essay - does the educational and skill level you plan to achieve allow you to live the life style that you want to live?
  • Think about a mall where you shop. Name examples of business that compete with each other. Compare the methods they use to attract customers. Why can you choose which store you go to? Can you open your own store? Why? What would you need to open your own store? What would happen if the government took control of the mall and they allowed there to be only one shoe store that sells shoes that the government designed and sell them at the price the government says to, and you can not shop anywhere else, nor can you open your own store.
